— Brazilian jiu-jitsu —
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling martial art, with roots in Japanese Jiu Jitsu, which was then refined in Brazil through full contact combat, and adapted to the style we know today. Jiu Jitsu fighters specialise in ‘ground work’. Students learn how to throw, pin, control and submit an opponent without the use of strikes. For this reason, BJJ is sometimes referring to as ‘The Gentle Art’- you can dominate and beat an opponent without inflicting physical injury.
Modern BJJ has been heavily influenced by the competition scene, developing into an exciting combat sport it’s own right- sometimes referred to as “Sport Jiu Jitsu”- with new techniques and positions emerging all the time. At it’s core remains an effective, battle-tested full-contact martial art which is also highly applicable in self-defence and MMA. At Fightworx we have an active competition team, although many of our students train recreationally, simply enjoying being part of the team and recognising the physical and social benefits of training.
We follow the IBJJF grading system which, like most martial arts, involves a system of coloured belts (White, Blue, Purple, Brown and Black) as well as stripes awarded on the belt to signify progression towards the next grade. What is unique about the grading system in BJJ is that there is no formal test or grading fee- your instructor simply awards you with your stripe or belt when they recognise you have progressed sufficiently to be awarded it. This means that when achieved, your grading is a surprise and a very rewarding and memorable moment.
If you are interested in starting BJJ, we advise you attend our Sunday beginners classes for at least the first 6-8 weeks. We deliver a rolling curriculum, covering all the fundamental positions and techniques of BJJ which will give you a solid foundation from which to work. You can then progress into the ‘All Levels’ sessions.
